The first Ducati Monster press campaign, launched in 1993, challenged motorcyclists by asking “How many motorcycles can you recognise without reading the name on the tank?” A rare example where the advertising wasn't exaggerated at all; in fact, in this case, it could have gone much further to highlight the newcomer's many qualities. High performance, of course. Great road holding, of course. But the Monster was already more than the sum of its qualities, combining charm and riding fun like rarely before. Above all, it single-handedly opened up a new niche: that of sporty, characterful naked bikes.
This book retraces the entire Monster saga with a detailed historical and technical analysis of all the models—and there are many!—built in Borgo Panigale over thirty years.
It begins with the M900 and concludes with the very recent 2026 890, featuring a front-frame chassis and a revamped V-twin engine. Then there are its smaller siblings—also analyzed in their respective evolutions—in the 600 and 750 displacements, as well as the incredibly powerful older sibling with the 4-valve engine, the one whose progenitor is the S4 model.
The initial developments, the competitors, commentaries from the most important newspapers of the time, the Monster in art and the world of collecting, and production numbers are the other topics covered in this volume, the most comprehensive ever published on the subject.
The book is written by Giorgio Sarti, the author who has published the most motorcycle books in Italy.
